The North West of Tasmania is home to the world’s second greatest expanse of temperate rainforest – the Tarkine Wilderness, and Tasmania’s iconic alpine wonderland – Cradle Mountain. From rugged coastlines and ancient rainforests to serene rivers and idyllic beaches, there are plenty of things to see here. Speaking of rivers, Leven River is one of the state’s only rivers that has not been used for irrigation purposes. A relaxing river cruise from Ulverstone lets you take nature’s bounties, including the incredible bird life. Arthur River is another major river in the North West. The township of Arthur River sits on the westernmost town of Tasmania and is dubbed as the ‘Edge of The World’. If you’re keen on exploring the great Tarkine Wilderness, this is a great base.

Conquer the summit of Cape Grim, which is said to have the world’s cleanest air, brought by the Roaring Forties winds! Or, take in the scent of rainforests along the 125 km-long Tarkine Drive. Your trip to Tasmania is far from complete without visiting the iconic Cradle Mountain – a wonderland of mossy rainforests, rugged mountains, scenic trails, alpine grasslands and glacial lakes. This unique corner of the world is also home to numerous Australian wildlife. Encounter the elusive Tasmanian Devils, meet a shy wombat, spot a wallaby or pademelon hiding in the grass, or a secretive platypus lurking near the river or lakes. But be sure not to touch them and maintain a respectful distance!
